Introduction
Substance use disorder intervention (SUDI) has become a critical concern for communities in the Northern Cape and Limpopo, with rising rates of drug and alcohol abuse impacting vulnerable groups, particularly the youth. Substance abuse contributes to a host of social, economic, and health problems, including increased crime rates, deteriorating mental health, unemployment, and family breakdown.
In 2023/24, SIOC-CDT’s Substance Use Disorder Programme has been a core element of health and wellness initiatives, focusing on prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance abuse disorder, and engaging with vulnerable groups, especially the youth.
How it works
The programme offers comprehensive support, including education, counselling, and access to rehabilitation services. By working in partnership with local healthcare providers, social services, and community-based organisations, the programme delivers holistic support to vulnerable groups, especially youth, across Limpopo and the Northern Cape.
SIOC-CDT also works to capacitate and mentor emerging NPOs that address substance abuse at the community level:
- Tsantsabane Alcohol and Drug Services (TADS)
- SUDI Kuruman
- Thabazimbi SUDI Tlhokomelang Sechaba
What takes place
Active outreach campaigns educate communities about the risks and impacts of substance abuse. By raising awareness and understanding, the programme aims to prevent substance use and reduce stigma, with a particular focus on at-risk groups such as youth. Substance abuse awareness is also incorporated into broader wellness initiatives, such as the Re a Fola programme, which focuses on mental health and related issues such as depression and anxiety that are often intertwined with substance use disorders.
Individuals affected by substance use disorder can access counselling and support networks that provide guidance, coping strategies, and help in navigating recovery journeys.
The programme connects individuals with accessible and appropriate rehabilitation services through collaborations with local healthcare providers, offering a pathway to recovery and reintegration.
The Substance Abuse Programme has made a significant impact in the fight against substance use disorder in Limpopo and the Northern Cape. Through comprehensive prevention, education, and recovery efforts, SIOC-CDT has supported individuals and families in overcoming substance abuse while strengthening community resilience.
